Semaglutide has gained significant popularity thanks to its ability to lower blood glucose levels and support weight loss. LuMedic has prepared this article to help you learn about how semaglutide works, its cost, and its availability
How Does Semaglutide Support Weight Loss and Diabetes Treatment?
- Lowers blood glucose by increasing insulin and reducing glucagon.
- Provides satiety by slowing gastric emptying and acting on appetite control.
Reduces body fat, facilitating weight loss.
Indications for Semaglutide Use
Semaglutide is primarily indicated for:
- Treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults with inadequate glycemic control despite diet and exercise.
- Overweight (BMI 27–<30 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related comorbidity (e.g., prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, obstructive sleep apnea).
- Obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²).
From What Age Can Semaglutide Be Used?
Semaglutide is approved from the age of 12.
From age 12, semaglutide may be prescribed for adolescents with obesity (BMI ≥95th percentile for age and sex) and body weight >60 kg
Semaglutide – Price and Therapy Costs in Poland
Approximate prices:
- Ozempic (injection) – one pen (4 doses) costs ~PLN 400–450 (full price), about a monthly therapy cost. With reimbursement: ~PLN 127. Seniors may be eligible for free treatment.
- Wegovy (FlexTouch, injection) – not reimbursed. Prices range from PLN 600 (0.25 mg) to PLN 1700 (2.4 mg) per pack. Monthly cost depends on dosage.
- Rybelsus (tablets) – not reimbursed, monthly therapy ~PLN 400–450.
Factors affecting price:
- Reimbursement – only for type 2 diabetes under specific conditions (30% co-payment or full exemption).
- Form and dosage – Wegovy is more expensive than Ozempic; higher doses cost more.
Pharmacy and supply – reimbursed prices are fixed, but availability varies; online purchases without a prescription are illegal and risky.

Can You Get Semaglutide Without a Prescription?
Semaglutide is available by prescription only, both in injectable (Ozempic, Wegovy) and oral (Rybelsus) forms. In Poland, it is not legally possible to purchase it without a prescription.
Warning: Illegal online offers claiming to sell semaglutide without a prescription often involve counterfeit products that may be ineffective or harmful.
Risks of buying without a prescription:
- No quality control, unclear origin, no registration.
- Health risks, incorrect dosing, fake ingredients, lack of medical supervision.
- Potential side effects and contraindications (dangerous during pregnancy or with comorbidities).
No reimbursement or professional guidance (user assumes full risk).
Over-the-Counter Alternatives and Supplements for Weight Management
Dietary supplements do not reduce body weight as effectively as prescription medications, but may offer some support:
- Berberine – supports glucose control, often compared to metformin.
- Omega-3 fatty acids – improve lipid profile and heart health.
- Probiotics – may support insulin sensitivity and possibly glucose metabolism.
“Natural Ozempic” (Elcella) – a planned UK supplement intended to stimulate PYY and GLP-1 hormones; EU availability remains uncertain.

Ozempic (injection):
- Month 1: 0.25 mg once weekly
- Month 2: 0.5 mg once weekly
- Month 3: 1 mg once weekly (common maintenance dose for type 2 diabetes)

- Women of childbearing potential should use contraception during treatment.

Summary
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that supports type 2 diabetes management and weight reduction. In Poland, it is available only with a prescription. Buying it without one is illegal and unsafe. Natural OTC supplements may support glucose and appetite regulation but cannot replace the clinical effectiveness of semaglutide. Always consult a physician if you have concerns.
